Narrow is the Gate

"Narrow is the Gate." I can't tell you how many times I've heard this phrase in my life time. The Hutterite tradition says that the "Narrow Gate" is the Hutterite Colony or the Hutterite Lifestyle. Hutterite tradition teaches that the Outside World or anyone outside the colony is going through the "Gate to Destruction".

I don't find this message in the Bible though. I do find that there is a gate to destruction that exists in our minds.  This gate to destruction is in our minds whether we live in the Hutterite Colony or outside the Hutterite Colony. Jesus described the road to destruction in the following examples.

“You have heard that it was said to those of old, ‘You shall not murder, and whoever murders will be in danger of the judgment.’ But I say to you that whoever is angry with his brother without a cause shall be in danger of the judgment. And whoever says to his brother, ‘Raca!’ shall be in danger of the council. But whoever says, ‘You fool!’ shall be in danger of hell fire. Matthew 5:21-22 (NKJV)

“You have heard that it was said to those of old, ‘You shall not commit adultery.’ But I say to you that whoever looks at a woman to lust for her has already committed adultery with her in his heart. Matthew 5:27-28 (NKJV)

Notice that this road is within a man or woman. It's important to understand where to look for the gate to destruction. So many religions have people looking outside themselves and away from the real problem.

So how do we avoid the gate to destruction? God's word is clear about this too. We need to bring every thought into captivity.

For though we walk in the flesh, we do not war according to the flesh. For the weapons of our warfare are not carnal but mighty in God for pulling down strongholds, casting down arguments and every high thing that exalts itself against the knowledge of God, bringing every thought into captivity to the obedience of Christ, and being ready to punish all disobedience when your obedience is fulfilled. 2 Corinthians 10:3-6 (NKJV)

But what about the phrase "Narrow is the Gate." Is the Hutterite Colony really the "Narrow Gate"? The Bible describes the Narrow Gate in Matthew.

“Enter by the narrow gate; for wide is the gate and broad is the way that leads to destruction, and there are many who go in by it. Because narrow is the gate and difficult is the way which leads to life, and there are few who find it.  Matthew 7:13,14

The Pharisees didn't understand what Jesus meant when he spoke about the Narrow Gate. So he explained it with a story.

“Most assuredly, I say to you, he who does not enter the sheepfold by the door, but climbs up some other way, the same is a thief and a robber. But he who enters by the door is the shepherd of the sheep. To him the doorkeeper opens, and the sheep hear his voice; and he calls his own sheep by name and leads them out.  And when he brings out his own sheep, he goes before them; and the sheep follow him, for they know his voice.  Yet they will by no means follow a stranger, but will flee from him, for they do not know the voice of strangers.”  Jesus used this illustration, but they did not understand the things which He spoke to them.  John 10:1-6

They still didn't understand what Jesus was saying so he explained it in plain words.

Then Jesus said to them again, “Most assuredly, I say to you, I am the door of the sheep. All who ever came before Me are thieves and robbers, but the sheep did not hear them. I am the door. If anyone enters by Me, he will be saved, and will go in and out and find pasture. The thief does not come except to steal, and to kill, and to destroy. I have come that they may have life, and that they may have it more abundantly.  John 10:7-10

The bible tells us that Jesus is the “Narrow Gate.” He is the only gate that leads to heaven. Anyone who tells us otherwise should be considered a thief and a robber.

Jesus said to him, “I am the way, the truth, and the life. No one comes to the Father except through Me. John 14:6
