Leading and Guiding

My son Paul's wife Rachel called from their ranch the other day. She asked if I could pick up some fence posts. The cattle knocked down the fence and repairs were needed. I drove into the local hardware store and purchased the fence posts. Then I drove my truck over to the pickup dock.

I started talking to the young fellow who loaded my new posts into my truck. He told me about himself and after loading a few posts the conversation worked its way around to talking about the Lord.

He said, "I gave my heart to the Lord three weeks ago." Then he began complaining that God had caused him nothing but trouble. "My girl friend left me and I feel like just ending my life."

I said, "Wait a moment! Who says God didn't do that for your own Good. Maybe God was saving you from a bad marriage. Is it really God's fault that she left? I know several guys who were in a similar situation. They had to pay a lot of money to support spouses who hate them. But you are Free now! God actually saved you a lot of trouble."

He said, "I guess maybe you're right."

I visited the same hardware store three weeks later. That same young fellow was working that day. He thanked me for sharing the truth with him. Our conversation was what he needed to give up his ideas of suicide.

You know, if the cows had not run down the fence that day, I never would have gone to that farm implement store for fence posts. That fellow could have become another victim of Satan's lies. My meeting with this fellow was the leading and the guiding of the Holy Spirit. It was not an accident.

You and I can be lead and guided by the Holy Spirit every day. What is the leading and the guiding of the Holy Spirit though? Jesus demonstrated how to be lead and guided by the Holy Spirit in the book of John, chapters 13, 14 and 15.

Why was the Holy Spirit given? Jesus said we would do greater works than He did. But we can't do these things with our own strength. No, we need to be Lead and Guided by the Holy Spirit. This is the reason God sent His Holy Spirit.

“Most assuredly, I say to you, he who believes in Me, the works that I do he will do also; and greater works than these he will do, because I go to My Father. And whatever you ask in My name, that I will do, that the Father may be glorified in the Son. If you ask anything in My name, I will do it.  “If you love Me, keep My commandments. And I will pray the Father, and He will give you another Helper, that He may abide with you forever— the Spirit of truth, whom the world cannot receive, because it neither sees Him nor knows Him; but you know Him, for He dwells with you and will be in you. I will not leave you orphans; I will come to you. John 14:12-18

Jesus could see that His disciples just didn't understand the whole picture and He wasn't going to be around much longer to help them out. So he explained the Father's plan for the disciples and for us today. He knew we would need help.

A little while longer and the world will see Me no more, but you will see Me. Because I live, you will live also. John 14:19

The Father's plan is to lead us and guide us through the Holy Spirit. The Holy Spirit teaches us all things. The Holy Spirit is the Peace Jesus left with us.

“These things I have spoken to you while being present with you. But the Helper, the Holy Spirit, whom the Father will send in My name, He will teach you all things, and bring to your remembrance all things that I said to you. Peace I leave with you, My peace I give to you; not as the world gives do I give to you. Let not your heart be troubled, neither let it be afraid.  John 14:25-27

Our heavenly father has a plan for every day of our life. He wants to do greater things through us than Jesus did. But we must be connected with His Holy Spirit.

But how can we get connected with the Holy Spirit? Well, we start by spending time with His Holy Spirit in prayer every day. And we allow our minds to be taught by the Holy Spirit through the Word of God.

What will the Holy Spirit do for us? He will teach us all that we need to know. He will Lead and Guide us into the peace of Christ.  He will Lead us and Guide us to do the things that we've read about in the Gospels. Read it again. This is what Jesus promised.

Take a moment to ask God about this. "Father, I want to follow your leading and guiding every day. Teach me through our Holy Spirit. Lead me and Guide me with your Holy Spirit from this day forward. I'm listening. What are you teaching me today? Where are you guiding me today?" Then listen for a few moments in quiet. Wait for His soft, gentle voice. Don't be afraid. He has your best interests in mind.
