I read John 3:16 in my devotions again this month. Christians often overlook this verse because it is so well known. This verse tells us that our salvation was planned by God and if we accept Christ Jesus we will live an eternal life with God. But these simple words have a much deeper meaning.
For God so loved the world that He gave His only begotten Son, that whoever believes in Him should not perish but have everlasting life. John 3:16 (NKJV)
My daughter and her family recently moved back to Montana. A few years back her daughter Heidi said, "I want to move back to Montana." Heidi loved her month long visits to Montana every summer. She was so excited when my daughter told her they would move back. But her mother knew it wasn't as simple as that. They had to sell their house, pack their belongings, and clear dad's move with his manager. Heidi had no idea how much work was behind the words, "Yes, we will move to Montana."
Christians read John 3:16 in their devotions and think, "Sure, I believe that." But what did it take for our heavenly Father to make these words a reality? He sent His only Son to Die. He was forced to forsake His only son.
A battle was fought to free us from sin that day. This verse is the battle cry that sounded from the throne of God that day. We had one chance for freedom from the dark overlord of this world. Jesus went to the front line for us. His blood poured out on enemy ground to make everlasting life a reality. John 3:16 is much more than a Sunday school verse.
And what is everlasting life? Some folks push their everlasting life off until after they die. But our spirits are quickened to life when we ask Jesus to be our Lord and Saviour. Why put off living an abundant life until after we die? Paul says in Philippians that God will complete His work in us until Jesus returns.
Being confident of this very thing, that He who has begun a good work in you will complete it until the day of Jesus Christ… Philippians 1:6 (NKJV)
How does God complete His good work in us? He starts by applying the blood that Christ Jesus spilled on the battle field. His blood can be applied to every part of our life. His blood washes our sins away, purifies our mind, covers us with protection, and heals our bodies. I visualize a fountain of blood that we must walk through when we are saved. Our old garments are laid on the ground and we pass through the fountain of blood. We are washed and ready to start our everlasting life.
How much more shall the blood of Christ, who through the eternal Spirit offered Himself without spot to God, cleanse your conscience from dead works to serve the living God? Hebrews 9:14 (NKJV)
Our enemy, satan, wants us to live defeated lives. He wants us to accept the world's fallen standards. He uses our sinful past to handicap our futures. But the blood of Christ covers our past. Guilt and shame is washed away. Don't let satan fill you with regret and depression.
Did you stumble along the way? God said He would complete a good work in you. So turn to Him now and ask for forgiveness. Then put all that you are under the Blood of Jesus. Remember, the Blood of Christ Jesus ended all sin on that battle field where He fell.
Choose to live an everlasting, victorious life through the blood of Christ Jesus. Jesus didn't stay on that battle field. He rose and returned to heaven with victory over sin and death. He longs for you to live an everlasting life. Start today.
