These days it's easy to focus on the bad economy. Nearly every day we hear another store closed or another bank collapsed. People are losing jobs by the thousands, their 401K plans are in jeopardy and even their homes are at risk. And what about the price of groceries and the fluctuating gas prices? It seems that bad news is everywhere. Still we need to remember that we to can trust in the Lord.
What does the Bible tell us to do in these seasons? Jesus says simply, "Don't Worry".
“Therefore I say to you, do not worry about your life, what you will eat or what you will drink; nor about your body, what you will put on. Is not life more than food and the body more than clothing? Look at the birds of the air, for they neither sow nor reap nor gather into barns; yet your heavenly Father feeds them. Are you not of more value than they? Which of you by worrying can add one cubit to his stature? “So why do you worry about clothing? Consider the lilies of the field, how they grow: they neither toil nor spin; and yet I say to you that even Solomon in all his glory was not arrayed like one of these. Now if God so clothes the grass of the field, which today is, and tomorrow is thrown into the oven, will He not much more clothe you, O you of little faith? “Therefore do not worry, saying, ‘What shall we eat?’ or ‘What shall we drink?’ or ‘What shall we wear?’ For after all these things the Gentiles seek. For your heavenly Father knows that you need all these things. But seek first the kingdom of God and His righteousness, and all these things shall be added to you. Matthew 6:25-33
Jesus wants us to realize that the things of this world come and go. We can't depend on investments, jobs, homes, banks or even our government. The only thing that stands firm during the storm is the kingdom of God and God's plan for our life.
Worry never helps. Worry is like quicksand. A person who struggles in quicksand will quickly be swallowed up. But if he remains still and calls for help, he can be rescued. Likewise, if we daily focus on the disasters and frantically worry about our future; our lives will be swallowed up by the circumstances around us. But if we stand still and remember to call out to our Lord Jesus, He will rescue us.
How do we start? Matthew 6:33 describes what we should do. Seek the kingdom of Heaven and our Lord's righteousness. Jesus tells us to focus on Him daily and live like He lived. He will take care of the rest. He promises to throw us His life line and rescue us from our circumstances. Not only does he rescue us but He says that He will add ALL that we need to our lives.
Yes, times are tough but if we are confirmed to the world's way of thinking we will live our lives in despair like the world does. Our heavenly Father has a better plan for us.
I beseech you therefore, brethren, by the mercies of God, that you present your bodies a living sacrifice, holy, acceptable to God, which is your reasonable service. And do not be conformed to this world, but be transformed by the renewing of your mind, that you may prove what is that good and acceptable and perfect will of God. Romans 12:1-2
So take the first step. Turn the TV news off and pickup your bible. Plant yourself firmly in God's plan for your life. Seek His kingdom, His economy, His reality first. Spend more time learning how to grow in His righteousness and less time worrying. God's word says He will meet all our needs.
And my God shall supply all your need according to His riches in glory by Christ Jesus. Philippians 4:19
